Drunk or Insane
W. R. Hash, of Taylor County, Shoots his Daughter while she is mixing him a toddy.
A most brutal and inhuman tragedy was enacted a few miles from this place, just over the line in Taylor County, last Thursday, in which the brutal assassin was a father, and his daughter was the victim.

William R. Hash, while in a drunken condition, shot and seriously, if not mortally, wounded his daughter.

Hash is a farmer in good circumstances, is peaceable when sober, but when drunk gives a great deal of trouble. He has been twice married and the daughter referred to is a child by his first wife. His second marriage was to Miss Lou Cheltz, daughter of Nicholas Cheltz, now deceased, who was well known in this community.

It seems that Mr. Hash and his wife did not agree on all matters nor did he and his daughter. Quarrels frequently occurred, and on last Wednesday his wife left home because of a fuss they had had that day. On Thursday morning Hash requested his daughter to mix him up a sweetened toddy, and while she
was thus engaged he began abusing her, and finally pulled his pistol and taking deliberate aim shot her, the ball entering the left breast, penetrating the lungs and lodging against the spine. His act doubtless
aroused him from his drunken frenzy, and he carried her to a bed and made her as comfortable as possible. Neighbors soon came in and medical aid was called.. The physicians state that the wound is a very dangerous one. Their first impression was that it would be impossible for the lady to get well, but since then hopes are entertained for her recovery.

The more charitably inclined state that it is their belief that Hash was insane at the time of committing the deed, but those who have seen him when drunk say that his insanity amounted to nothing more nor less than one of his occasional drunks, and bitter feelings exist with a great many against him. He is now at Campbellsville, the County seat of Taylor County, awaiting trial and it is probable that the insanity dodge will be resorted to as an excuse for the crime. But the law in no case recognizes a plain drunk as one and the same thing as insanity and it is hardly probable that a man would be affected with both at the same time.

Nina Hash Stiles states that her great grandfather, William Robert hash, had a cemetery on the farm. There was a fence, with graves on the back fence. there were no stones, but McKinley Hash, father of Nina, was never allowed to play there because of the graves. The graves, however, did not belong to the family. Nina doesn't know who is buried there. The farm and cemetery is now on the McKinley hash farm.

There are 2 stones at the Hash Cemetery which state Katie Hash. The data on the first stone was incorrect, so a second stone was made, the first stone was set aside, but left at the cemetery.

One hundred years ago when the 1900 Taylor County census was taken, William R. and his wife Lucy E. Hash are living in the Oak Hill district. They are listed as being married 34 years but this is not so. William R. married Lucy Cheltz in 1887 after my Great Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Dewitt (Allen) Hash had died. Lucy is listed as the mother of 2 children, 1 living. Their nearest neighbor is Jesse Purvis and his wife Martha on one side and John T. Purvis and his wife Darcus on the other side.
In 1910 they are family # 182 in the Taylor County census living in the Oak Hill district. They have been married 30 years. Louella, as she is written in the census, is listed as the mother of 3 children, 2 living.
In the 1920 Taylor County census we find William R. Hash, age 75, head of household #168 still living in the Oak Hill district. His wife's name is clearly written as 'Lee C. Hash,' age 69. They live alone.

The more charitably inclined state that it is their belief that Hash was
insane at the time of committing the deed, but those who have seen him
when drunk say that the insanity amounted to nothing more nor less than
one of his occasional drunks, and bitter feelings exist with a great many
against him. He is now at Campbellsville, the county seat of Taylor
County, awaiting a trial and it is probable that the insanity dodge will
be resorted to as an excuse for this crime. But the law in no case
recognizes a plain drunk as one and the same thing as insanity and it is
hardly probable that a man would be affected with both at the same time.

Taylor County -
The Times-Journal has the following to say in reference to the shooting
of Miss Ruth Hash by her father, a few weeks ago. "Wm. Hash, who, about
three weeks ago, shot his grown daughter, Ruth, while in a state of
intoxication, and whose trial was set for last Monday, at Poplar Grove
precinct, waived an examining trial before 'Squire' Marshall' and gave
bond in the sum of $600 for his appearance at the next term of the Taylor
Circuit Court. We learn that it is impossible for his daughter to
recover.
