Joseph Alt was reported to have been born in 1859.2 He was born on 19 March 1860 at # 8, Girsig, Austro Hungarian Empire.3,4 He was baptized on 20 March 1860 at Girsig, Austro Hungary.5,4 He married Caroline Zwiener, daughter of Joseph Zwiener, on 27 April 1885 at District # 41 schoolhouse, Alexis Township 6 miles west of Bellwood, Nebraska. Joseph Alt died on 26 April 1953 at age 93.3 He was buried after 26 April 1953 at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Shelby, Nebraska.6
He immigrated in 1877. He resided before 1900 at Bismark Precint, Platte County, Nebraska. A letter found in a trunk purchasted by Bruce L Alt at the estate sale of Joseph Alt (son of Oswald Alt, son of Joseph Alt) it was found that Joseph Alt, his wife, Caroline, and their children Oswald and Emma took a trip to Europe in 1923. They visited relatives in Cesky Tesin which is on the border with Czechoslovakia and Poland. The relatives that they visited were Englebert Siersch and apparently a daughter, Gerda, and a sister? Flora.
This letter was written by Gerda Siersch to Emma Alt, daughter of Joseph and Caroline Alt. Gerda mentions Joseph and Caroline as Uncle and Aunt. However, it cannot be determined if Joseph and Caroline wer true Uncle and Aunt or these titles were used as a title of respect by Gerda. If this Joseph and Caroline were truly uncle and aunt one would think that it would be most likely on the the Zweiner (Caroline's) side of the family circa 1900.6

Joseph Michael Urban Alt was born on 24 April 1931 at Shelby, Nebraska.1 He died on 5 March 2006 at Wolbach, Nebraska, at age 74.1 He was buried on 9 March 2006 at Osceola Cemetery, Osceola, Nebraska.1
He was educated before 1944 at Guardian Angel Boarding School, Oneida, Wisconsin. He was educated before 1944 at St. Benedict School, Blue Island, Illinois. Because of the health of his mother, Joe was moved, along with his older siblings, to Blue Island, Illinois. His school years were at St. Benedict School in Blue Island. He practiced as a Mormon for awhile. He and his sister, Anne, made several two-week trips to Germany and Italy in one year and to France and Spain another year, then to Australia, and later to China. He was especially interested in the agricultural land in those places. Upon returning to the U.S. he would comment how beautiful the landscape and and agricultural land was in our Great Plains.
Answering an ad to accompany a Kansas farmer, he flew to Bolivia, South America. He fell in love with Bolivia, returning for a month or so a couple of times a year. He eventually bought some undeveloped ranch land, expecting to "snowbird" there a part of the year. After an auto accident and then a delayed gall bladder operation in December of 2004 and early 2005, then making a nice recovery, he fell into bad health. He became interested in aviation to the extent of sketching airplanes at his desk in grade school. In later life he bought and sold light small aircraft, which he never himself flew, but which took him to various parts of the country to sell. For a time he was a member of a small craft aviation club. After 1944 Joe was an avid reader. One of the first things he bought were several volumes of the Great Books by Adler of the University of Chicago. He seemed well versed on the volume of the philosopher, Plato. He spent much time at the public library and bought a considerable number of books through the mail, as well as, buying and collecting loads of second hand books. He resided before November 1944 at Blue Island, Illinois. He resided after 29 November 1944 at Shelby, Nebraska. He began military service on 26 October 1948. He and his brother, Jack, joined the United States Navy, where they served in the Korean War from Oct. 26, 1948 unitl Oct. 29, 1952, mostly serving on ships. He was discharged from military service on 29 October 1952. After the service in the Navy, under the GI Bill of Rights, he and his brother, Jack, learned farming and bought land in northern Howard County, where they farmed for many years. After Jack died in 1983, Joe for a shorter time continued farming, but seeing how much better other, especially younger, farmers farmed, he rented out the land and bought more to be rented after 29 October 1952.
