September 18, 1908, Bert Skaggs shot and killed Will Akridge of Larue Co. last week.
Abstracted by Ruth Perkins; Green County Review, Summer 1993

Then about 1907 two whiskey men met close to Badger Post Office, one named Will Aken (Akridge) and I have forgotten the other man's name, but the other man had a friend with him named Burt Skaggs. The other man was scared and he asked his friend to help him out. Burt was just seventeen and carried a gun. He shot Aken (Akridge) dead. Burt got five years. Here was yet another young man killed and a young boy's life ruined by whiskey.

HistorySylvester Elder Price witnessed In the 1870 Taylor County Census for Saloma Precinct 1, Sylvester E. Price was family #124. He was 27 years of age, a Farmer born in Kentucky. His wife, Elizabeth, was 24 and also born in Kentucky. The children were: Lucetta, 4; Nancy, 2; and Samuel, age 7 months. Their neighbors were Hartwell Martin and William R. Skaggs.

In the 1880 Taylor County Census for the Oak Hill Precinct, Sylvester Price was family 227. He was 36 years old. His wife, Lizzie, was 35. The children were: Lucetta, 14; Samuel, 10; Arabel, 8; Amanda, 6; Charlie, 4; Margaret A., 2; and Mary J., age 6 months.

In 1910 when the federal census was taken Sylvester E. Price is family #95 living in the Oak Hill district of Taylor County. His wife is Ruthie A., age 37, they have been married one year. This is his third marriage and her second. There are no others in the household.

In the 1920 Taylor County census, Sylvester is married to Ruth A., age 51. They live in household #194 in the Oak Hill district.

The following quotation from Ben Jones Book, THE OLD MILL STREAM, gives
names of his wives differing from the ones in my records here.

"Now, I'd have to go a mile further down the creek to Sylvester Prices's
Mill. He was born Dec. 4, 1843 and died 4 24 1924, U. S. 1861-1864 Co.
F. 13th Kentucky Infantry. His first wife was Elizabeth (born April 15,
1846 and died June 24, 1906). His second wife was Margaret Jones ( born
April 25, 1853 and died November 8, 1908). Margaret Jones was 52 when (about 1906)she
married Sylvester Price. When I went to the mill now, he'd say "Now you
go up to the house and talk to your Aunt Marg."

Sylvester operated a grist mill about a mile downstream from the Maple post office.
When King Solomon Skaggs' dam broke during a flash flood, the flood also washed out
Sylvester's mill.

From the Campbellsville News-Journal 27 May 1915:
CLOUDBURST
On Headwaters of Pitman Creek Six Year Old Son of Arthur Hash Drowned.

Yesterday about 2 P. M. there was a cloud burst on the headwaters of Pitman
Creek, near Maple in the west end of this county which caused the death of
six-year-old Claudie Hash, son of Arthur Hash, and a great loss of property in the
neighborhood.
The child was at a mill belonging to Mr. Sylvester Price, and was drowned
when the mill was washed away. Two horses were hitched near the mill, one
belonging to Thomas Ratcliff and the other to Wilson Underwood, both were
drowned. The King Skaggs' mill about one mile above the Price mill was also
washed away, as was the blacksmith shop of J. W. Gaddie further down the
creek. Sylvester Price also lost about 50 bushels of corn, a new wagon
belonging to Esq. Will Bennett went down the stream. Much damage was done to
crops, fencing, etc.

Sylvester Price was in Company F, 13th Kentucky Infantry. Same company as
Samuel Sutherland Allen.
